Federal Union AGM and conference – 19 March 2011

Federal Union’s annual conference will look at two subjects:

– The future of the eurozone – can it survive the current financial crises, and what does this mean for Britain?
– The rise of China and what it means for foreign policy

Non-members welcome.

Programme

10.30 am coffee and registration
11 am Britain and the future of the eurozone
Guest speakers: John Palmer (European Policy Centre, former European editor of the Guardian), Dr Andrew Blick (Federal Trust, Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Contemporary History, Senior Research Fellow at Democratic Audit)
What economic steps are needed to solve the financial crises affecting the member states of the eurozone.  Is there the political will in Europe to take those necessary steps?  And how will this affect the UK?
1 pm lunch
1.45 pm AGM session to receive the annual report and accounts and to elect a new committee for the coming year (for members of Federal Union)
2 pm The rise of China and what it means for foreign policy
Guest speakers: Dr Yiyi Lu (Research Fellow, China Policy Institute, University of Nottingham), Sir Michael Palliser (former Head of the UK Diplomatic Service) 
What role will a resurgent China play in the world in future?  To what role does Europe aspire on the world stage?  Does it have the means and the will to achieve it?

Elections

There are the following places on the committee to be filled at the AGM: Chair, three Deputy Chairs, Treasurer, Secretary, and 4 other places on the committee. Nominations may be accepted up until the meeting itself, so you do not have to complete and return the form, but it would help the organisation of the meeting if you are able to do so. If you would like to know more about what is involved in being a member of the committee, please contact Richard Laming at [email protected].
