EUROPE’S PLACE IN THE WORLD – AND BRITAIN’S PLACE IN EUROPE
MARY SUMNER HOUSE, 24 TUFTON STREET, LONDON SW1P 3RB
2.00 – 5.30 pm followed by a drinks reception
This third conference in a series undertaken jointly with the Global Policy Institute and co-funded by the European Commission Representation in the UK, examines Europe’s current place in the world, especially in the light of the Lisbon Treaty and the setting up of the External Action Service, and how the British and the British government see Britain’s part in the new arrangements.
The European External Action Service is set to appoint 7,000 diplomats in 132 embassies around the world. It is potentially one of the most powerful diplomatic forces in the world. How will Britain, semi-detached by virtue of being neither in the Eurozone nor a member of the Schengen Agreement, cope with this new layer of diplomacy?
Difficult decisions will need to be taken in the European context, which will play an important part in the European Union’s development over the coming years. Britain’s traditional importance in world affairs would seem to imply that she should play a leading part in any forthcoming developments. But how true is this? To discuss the question, we have assembled a distinguished panel :
Lord Hannay of Chiswick, House of Lords EU Select Committee
Professor Stephen Haseler, Director, Global Policy Institute
Dr Antonio Missiroli, Head of the European Dialogue Section, Bureau of European Policy Advisers, European Commission
Professor Richard Whitman, Professor of Politics, University of Bath
Chaired by Brendan Donnelly, Director of the Federal Trust
