The hypocrisy and absurdity of the anti-Europeans just keeps on growing. In the European Parliament yesterday, protesting at the signing of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, UKIP leader Nigel Farage declared:
“Referendum, we want a referendum. The people of Europe deserve to decide for themselves.”
The people of Europe? Normally, Nigel Farage rejects the existence of such a concept. The people of Britain, yes; the peoples of Europe, possibly. But suddenly, a man who denies that different European countries have enough in common to make shared democratic politics possible finds it helpful to argue the opposite.
