The revelation on Monday (14 March) that anti-globalisation campaigners Attac have received funding from the European Commission has provoked some criticism. I think that such criticism is wrong. It is better to have a debate open to all than one restricted to a few.
After all, democratic politics is a battle of ideas. The quality of democracy is related to the exposure and scrutiny to which different ideas can be subjected, and so it is important to ensure that this exposure and scrutiny actually takes place.
