We regret to report that Sir Anthony Meyer, former chair of Federal Union and Conservative MP, passed away on 24 December 2004.
Sir Anthony was a long-standing and distinguished pro-European. He was perhaps most famous for his challenge for leadership of the Conservative party against Margaret Thatcher in 1989, out of opposition to her European policies. He did not win, of course, but as he put it, “It made the unthinkable thinkable.”
He will be remembered by Federal Union as he was: a man of principle; an continual source of common sense; and a stalwart friend. We are saddened by his passing, and our thoughts are with his family.
