Monday 28 November 2011: 18.00 for 18.15 – 20.00
Goodenough College, Mecklenburgh Square, London WC1N 2AB
A seminar organised by the European Liberal Forum asbl. (ELF) with the support of the British think tank CentreForum, Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (Germany), and Stichting IDI (Netherlands)
Stephen Gilbert MP will be joined by FDP member of the German Bundestag Joachim Spatz (tbc), former Director of the Netherlands Defence College Kees Homan, and Dr Mette Eilstrup-Sangiovanni from the University of Cambridge.
At a time when defence budgets are being cut, should European countries pool and share military capabilities to remain ‘useful’ to the US? How will this affect the balance of power between Europe and its transatlantic allies? As attitudes and spending change within Europe and diverge from America, can NATO really survive as a ‘two-tiered alliance’?
The seminar will be followed by a drinks reception. A draft programme can be downloaded.
